Talk on emailing

Here is some of the stuff I talked about this morning ….

To customise Outlook Express … select Tools on the top toolbar, and
then Options from the drop-down menu . Have a look through all the
options at the top of the Options box (and disable the Preview Pane
facility, when you see it).

Think about having two email addresses … one for family & friends and
the other for business use … if the latter starts to get too much spam,
you can abandon it and start another one.

You can forward any important email from your Outlook Express email
site, to a “safer” email address that won’t disappear if your computer
were to be hit by a virus.

I’ll deal with how to send attachments in my next blog, as well as how
to create folders to put your Outlook Express emails in…. when I’ve
worked out how to do it. :)

Mailwasher for use with Outlook Express …

http://www.mailwasher.net/

(You can copy and then paste this into the URL/address box at the top of
your internet page, and then select “Go”)

Download the free version. There is helpful advice on how to use this, on
the Mailwasher website. Any emails highlighted in light blue are likely
to be malicious … however some of the emails in royal blue can be dodgy
too… so delete anything that looks suspicious. If the message appears to
be from a friend or family member, but the subject matter looks
suspicious, phone the person to ask if the email is genuine. A virus can
take over someone’s email address list and then spew out infected emails
to everyone on his/her list.

If I get an email saying: “A message for Hollinsjohn” in the subject box,
I delete it immediately… it’s computer generated.

Never reply to an email from any bank, even if it’s your bank
… a fraudster is trying to get hold of your account details and your
money. We get a lot of emails supposedly from PayPal and eBay, with
lots of ingenious stories about other people getting hold of and using
our account with them…. or requests to update/validate our account
with them We delete them.

Yahoo UK email …..

http://uk.yahoo.com/

select “Free Mail : Sign Up”

Nottingham Freecycle

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nottingham_freecycle/

To join, click on the blue box labelled “To Join” … remember to put in
your full name and full address into the relevant box about yourself.

You can look at all the stuff that’s on offer on the main web pages when
you’ve registered, but it’s unlikely you’ll get anything as there are so
many people using this site (including some people wanting stuff for
car boot sales, I suspect).

I use the Yahoo email to offer stuff to Freecycle and also if I want stuff
from Freecycle, and then wait for people to get in touch with me, by email.

Here is the email address for the Nottm Freecycle group, which you can
put into your Yahoo email address book …

For the first name, put nottingham

For the second name, put freecycle (both in lower case)

For the email address, put ….

nottingham_freecycle@yahoogroups.com

As regards the format of what you put in the Subject box, use the
format suggested by Nottm Freecycle ….

e.g.

OFFER: three seater settee (Lenton)
WANTED: child safety gate (Lenton)
TAKEN: colour TV set (Lenton)

Give a brief description of what you’re offering or wanting, and let
other members know when an item had been taken from your house.
Let people know how to contact you and about collection of the item,
e.g. perhaps from somewhere safer than your house, as Jo suggested
today.

If there’s a web page you’d like to see again and again (eg the web page
for BBC Nottingham’s weather), you can save the web page (URL)
address in your list of favourites.

Click on Favorites on the top toolbar, and Add in the left hand side
column.

Alongside the word Add, is the word Organize, which you can click
onto, to create folders for your web pages (and into which you can
place new web page addresses).

Hope you find this helpful.
