Using a FLASH DRIVE

Flash drives are wonderful devices for temporary storage of
documents and photos. They are lightweight and easy to use,
and they are great for transferring info from one computer to
another. They come in a variety of sizes and styles.

Click here for a link to see the Kingston 512MB flash drive.
(This one will cost you about £5.50 from a company linked to
Amazon)

For Windows XP & Vista users ...

Put the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

A small window/menu should then pop up onto your screen.

Select "Open folder to view files"

Another way of starting up a flash drive is ...
Right click on Start > Explore ... wait 15-30 seconds for
Windows to fully explore your hard drive. Scroll down the
list to find your flash drive (and then click on the link).

To transfer data onto your Desktop ...
1. Copy & paste (Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V)
2. Drag & drop ... which is faster.

To transfer stuff onto your flash drive, use (1) or (2).

To close the session
...
Look at the right hand corner of the taskbar (at the bottom of
the screen).
Find the little green icon for "Safely Remove Hardware"... you
might have to click on some double arrows there to display the
full list on the taskbar.
Click on the green icon and the subsequent pop-up (saying it's
now safe to remove the hardware). Remove the flash drive.

Multiple card reader (to download photos off your camera)
Quick & easy to use. Use in a similar way to the flash drive.
To see a card reader, click on this link here.

To transfer photos onto your computer ... find the relevant
folder, and then drag & drop it onto your computer.

Another way ...

1. create a new folder on your Desktop.
Right mouse click > New > Folder
Type in a new name ...eg 0208pics
Two mouse clicks just outside your new folder
Open up your new folder (and shrink it down a little by
clicking on the centre button at the top right corner).

2. Open up the folder of pics on your card reader.
Click on one photo (to highlight it)
Ctrl+A to select all the photos.
Click on a photo and then drag it (with all the other pics),
across into the 0208pics folder. Copies of all your pics
will now appear in the the 0208pics folder.

A couple of mouse features.

Have a go with these two tricks with your mouse right now
(assuming you've got a mouse with a little wheel built into the
top of it)....

1. Click onto the page, and scroll the wheel one way and then
the other way ... to scroll up and down the page.
2. Do the same thing again with the mouse wheel, but this time
keep the Control key pressed down ... helps resize the text.

These tricks work on Word documents, as well web-pages.
